Yellow House in the North Country: Sand and Snow

We had about two months in our new house before the snow started. Moving was a whirlwind. This is the biggest move I have made since the 90s. It was made under extreme duress. I was trying to walk after work in the evening to get my bearings learning our new neighborhood and area. On these walks, I noticed a lot of sand.

I didn’t think anything about the sand. I have lived in various places throughout the country. Different parts of this country have different kinds of dirt. When I was in Virigina, the dirt was red clay. On Cape Cod, we had sand. When we were on the New York – Pennsylvania border, the dirt down there was brown – traditional dirt you think of like mud.

Seeing sand, I just figured that was the type of dirt up here. The sand here is different than the sand on the Cape. The sand on the Cape is lighter in color – more tan. The sand here is darker in color – more brown. I just figured that the lighter sand was beach sand and the darker sand was mountain sand.

No matter what color of sand, it still tracks in the house. I was constantly sweeping the floors before the snow came.

Now that we are four months into our first North Country winter, I know the sand is not the natural dirt up here. Sand is used on the roads in the winter.

Our snow total thus far is 22 feet. Our biggest storm dumped 4 feet, followed by another 2 feet two days later. Who knows how much sand has been used on the roads. But there is enough of it being used every winter that it makes it seem like the dirt up here is sand, no matter the time of year. The sand doesn’t ever leave. It just sits as another layer on roads, yards and driveways.

The snow will melt (eventually), but the sand remains.

We have a brief warm up this week. We will be reaching the 30s for the first time since November. This is also the first time we have gone more than 48 hours without a winter storm warning for 6-7 inches (or more).

It is now February. I will admit, I am getting some cabin fever. It has been a long, stressful winter. There were medical appointments that had been scheduled for December that I have had to push to spring due to the weather.

For the past three months, it has been a challenge to get around. I have struggled to even get my mail from the post office.

Two weeks ago, I was finally able to get to my preferred grocery store for supplies. It was the first time since late October / early November due to the weather. The location of my preferred store gets hit worse with snow.

Now that we are more acclimated up here, I have three grocery stores I use depending on the weather.

The first is my preferred store. My preferred store offers pickup and has all my allergy friendly specialty items for my multiple food allergies. Unfortunately, this store is in an area that tends to be the hardest hit with snow and is the furthest drive for me.

My secondary store is closer.  The challenge is that I must go in person. While they have some allergy friendly items, they do not have a lot of them. It’s just hard on me physically to do all the shopping in person, especially when I shop for several weeks and the cart is completely full when I go to check out.

My third store is my Hail Mary. It’s the local market, which is close. It’s near the post office and the library. The local market does not have any of my specialty items. It does have basics. For the local market, it works best for me to get about two bags of groceries. I went in an emergency when the roads were too bad for me to get anywhere else.

A priority I had when we first moved into the house was restocking our emergency supplies, since we used our emergency supplies for the move. Not only did I restock the emergency supplies, but I increased our normal emergency supply by about 50% to try to take in account how much more severe the winters are up here compared to what I am used to. It was a good estimate.

Many times this winter, I have just done what I call the post office loop because the car needs to be driven. I can’t let the car sit too long. I must get it out and drive it. I drive to the post office because I need to check my mail. The library and local market are nearby. If I can make it to the post office, I do a little loop between the post office and home. I repeat it a few times because the car needs to be driven. That way the car gets out even though either the visibility or the roads (or both) are too poor to really go anywhere.

Winter is not over. We are only halfway through February and still have all of March to get through. We are doing ok though.

We are surrounded by snow. Once the snow is gone, we will be left with the sand. Let’s hope for a slow thaw so that melting snow does not flood.

80 Photographs

IMG_0163

There are literally thousands of photographs that I have taken and saved. Some are on cell phones, some are saved in my cloud account, and some are print only. The prints are mostly from the days when cameras had actual film and you had to wait a week for it to be developed. I have negatives for photos also.

I had quite a few photo albums and they took up a lot of space. In my minimizing, I purchased two photo storage cases that now hold all my physical photos. The two photo cases take up much less space than all of the photo albums. The photos are in their own case by category – person, event or trip.

The photos I look at the most are the ones that are framed and actually in the house. These are the photos that hang on the walls or sit on the mantle. Sometimes I look at the photos on my phone.

I’ve had some up and down feelings lately in the pandemic. Part of me feels positive that I will live long enough to be in a care home. I think that if that were to happen, I want one photo album of my very best memories. It is easier to look at a physical photo album than it is to scroll through electronic photos. I looked at my photos a lot more when they were in the bulky albums.

Part of me feels negative and I don’t know how I am going to survive the pandemic. I just don’t see myself being alive 15 years from now when all the cats are gone. That part of me thinks that if I was in a hospital or (more likely) dying at home, the last thing I want to make sure I see is photos of my cats.

Even though I down-sized years ago and got rid of all the photo albums, I am realizing that the only way I actually look at photos is if they are in an album.

I purchased a photo album that holds 80 photos. The album also gives space to write a note next to each photo. This aspect is important to me.

I have decided to go through the many thousands of photographs I have and curate them down into the 80 photographs that mean the most to me. I want a collection of the best memories of my life.

Starting with the photos that are actually in the house, I am realizing that I have had a pretty great life. I have had some amazing moments and memories. I have done great things. It is going to be very challenging to curate the best of my life into 80 photos.

At first, I started by making a formula. Given 80 photos, this is the formula I started with:

50 photos of the cats (5 cats – Kitty, Kip, Jude, Simon, Jolene), which means 10 photos of each cat, including photos of them in combinations i.e. Kitty & Kip, Kitty & Jude, Jude & Simon, etc.

10 photos of my camping trips

10 photos of my races – this one is a challenge with 18 medals and (hopefully) counting

10 photos of “other” – my once in a lifetime baseball game, trip to the MidWest, favorite photos not associated with the above categories

While this formula is a good start, I am quickly realizing that I have a lot more than 80 photos. I am either going to have to be ruthless curating, or find an album that holds 100? Photos instead.

The goal is that when the project is done, I will have one photo album of the cats and the highlights of my life. I want one place I can turn to in good times and bad times to relive the highlight reel of my life.

I guess the fact that I have so many good memories and photos from those memories is a good problem to have.

I am still going through photos, so I am not sure if I will take the curate ruthlessly or buy a larger photo album route. I do know that there will only be one photo album when I am done.

This project is turning out to be a lot bigger than I initially thought. It is also a lot more emotional that I thought. It is a good thing to relive positive memories in a challenging time. I have had a good life. It’s just kind of sad to think I may not survive the pandemic and that all the good times are behind me.

At this point, I am trying to remain positive. I am thoroughly enjoying going through my photo collection.

Has anyone else taken on a similar project for yourself or a loved one? Have you provided an older family member with memory issues with a photo album that is a highlight reel of their life? That is basically what I am trying to do for myself.

Right now, I am trying to focus on 80 photographs. That may expand to be 100 or more. The limit will definitely be under 200. I probably should have figured out my photo count before purchasing a photo album.

If you could only use so many photos to tell the story of your life and your best memories, how many would there be?

Changes Coming

WP_20190515_09_23_01_Pro

Hello there, Readers. We are coming up on the 4 year anniversary of this blog, and I have decided to make some subtle changes that you will hopefully enjoy. I’ve been doing a lot of thinking lately to be sure that this space is still meeting my needs and yours. I’ve been thinking about where we have been and where we are going.

Most things are staying the same. When I started this blog, the first thing that came out of my mouth was that all photos would be my own. There are no stock photos on this site. Every picture from the cover photo to what appears with a post is my own original photography. Sometimes, you get the good stuff. If you look through the archives, 2015 was a good photography year for me. Lately, it has been just pictures of my cats or whatever randomness is around me, as my health has curtailed my ability to chase after stellar shots.

Original photography will continue to be a top priority. I am hoping to get some great landscape shots again this summer for us all to enjoy.

Kind of inline with this goal of focusing on photography, I visited this blog from the anonymity of a public google search recently. I was dismayed to see ads sprinkled liberally throughout the post. The really alarming part was that the ads were photos of worms or intestines or something that was not aesthetically pleasing. One of the new changes that is coming is that I plan to upgrade this site to remove the ads. You’re welcome.

Although, I do ask that you please be patient with me in this process, as sometimes it take me a bit to figure things out. Kind of like back in the day when you would get posts with sideways pictures, no pictures, or the picture at the bottom. I have a learning curve.

I also thought about content. This started as a minimalism blog. Yes, you get minimalism. You also get blogs about running, cats, and whatever rambles through my brain. It’s my blog. Get over it. You can read if you want to.

I was thinking about re-branding to more strongly align to a particular theme and then decided to scratch that notion. This blog is my creative outlet. As long as I tag posts with the appropriate theme, people will find me. If I’m just writing into the abyss, that’s okay too.

The biggest change you are going to see will be a slightly new domain name. In keeping with the spirit of original content, and experimenting with google searches, I discovered that these three little words, Rewind Real Slow, most frequently pops up a music video. I do not want to be using a phrase that is already part of someone else’s artwork, so the name of this blog is most likely changing to Rewind Live Slow.

When I was contemplating nomenclature and (re)branding, I went through many ideas. I decided to stay as close to my original notion as humanly possible, since this is working for me. However, I have to be sure that my domain name is unique, so there will be a slight change. The spirit is the same. Hopefully the new website will be aesthetically pleasing.

I figured I would let you all know since I have followers, I am not sure if the technology will keep you or if I lose you when I make these changes. I really appreciate the people who follow me and take the time to read my words, so I want to give you a heads up in case I screw up the programming and accidentally lose you.

In a nutshell, the blog will be renamed Rewind Live Slow with accompanying domain name, and will hopefully appear as a web site without ads. We are still trying to create a life you don’t need to escape. The goal is always to be able to focus on the important things in life – the people you love and the things you like to do.

Please be patient with me and stay tuned. Thank you for reading. I appreciate you.

My First Art Show

WP_20181005_16_42_04_Pro

With my photo on display at my first professional art show – The Regional Photography Exhibit sponsored by the Cultural Council

I have the honor and the privilege of having one of my photos chosen for the Regional Photography Show this year held by the local Cultural Council. It is my first professional art show. Never before have I even submitted my work for anything.

As you can see from the opening reception photo above, the work I submitted is the piece that has been the cover photo of this blog from day one. I have never used any stock photos on this site. All photos are my original photography.

Granted, in the past few years since my stroke, most photos have been of the cats or whatever is immediately around me. You have to go back in the archives to see more of my landscapes when I was physically able to travel around more to the beaches and parks. My disability has kept me grounded and closer to home more than is normal.

My work will be hanging in the public library all month, along with some other very stunning and brilliant work. It is very humbling to see whose company I share.

The opening reception was an amazing opportunity to connect with the other photographers and artists. It meant so much to me that some of my coworkers and other of my community friends were there for the reception. I think next to buying my house last month, that my first art show is the highlight of my year.

One of the questions that was asked of us right before the show was hung was if our work is for sale and the price. I did not respond with my work being for sale. I don’t take photos to make money. I take photos because I enjoy it. Then, I post them here with some ramblings about my life at the moment for everyone to enjoy. So my photo is just hanging in the library for everyone to enjoy and it’s not for sale.

When my photo was chosen for the exhibit, I had it professionally mounted and framed. It is so much better than the $10 Walmart frame I had it in. Once my work is done being in the show, it will return to the space it occupies in the hall between the bathroom and bedroom. Except when it returns, it will be in a much more professional form.

I deeply appreciate all of my readers and everyone who visits my blog. No offense, but having one of my photos in the public library for the month is a little bit more amazing. It’s hanging in the library where I live for people in my community to see. That’s kinda cool.

However, I never would have made it this far or even had the gumption to enter the contest if it hadn’t been for the past 3 years of this blog. Thanks for reading. Thanks for being there. I just keep going trying to rewind real slow.

Thanks for supporting my work by reading me. This art show is dedicated to everyone who has been following my journey showcasing my work on this blog.
